We Cracked the Tests, We Have the Code

It's not unusual for our students to increase their scores by 300 points or to crack the 2100 mark. It’s largely because we pass the code along to our students and inspire them to study hard. We know the 15 math questions that appear on every test, the 20 grammar questions that appear on every test, the traps, and the slippery attempts designed to draw students to the wrong answers. While very difficult, the test is very coachable.

We have spent thousands and thousands of hours working with students and developing efficient methods to help them to succeed on the test.

We teach the test through the eyes of Jimmy and Jane, the two test makers who have made up all of the math and verbal questions on the test. On the first day of class students learn that the critical reading portion of the exam is an open book test, the text is the answer sheet. They learn how to use the 3-2 Method that we designed, the number of raw points they need to acquire to reach goal, and that they’re not looking for a needle in a haystack because Jane gives them the answer numerous times. They are taught to read the questions more slowly than they normally would read test questions, that they must always read the blurb at the top of the text, because it provides context and answers to general questions, and that they should not initially look to identify the right answer, but rather rule out three wrong answers. They quickly discover that three out of the five answer choices have little to do with what they just read. They then learn how to pace themselves and techniques for bubbling and dismissing potential answers, for example, the test abhors absolutes. They’re taught the importance of vocabulary and how to build their SAT vocabs, and to always remember what the Viola bothers said: “It’s not what you think the text is saying; it’s what the text says.”
